What are head lice?
Head lice are small, wingless insects that live exclusively on the human scalp, where they feed on small amounts of blood several times each day.
They typically spread by direct contact between heads. They can’t jump, fly, or survive for long off the scalp. They move from one head to another when children are close together. They’re more common during the school year, particularly among elementary school-age children, because classrooms, playgrounds, and sleepovers bring heads close together.
Head lice are an ordinary part of family life and can be treated effectively. They’re not a sign of anything except that your child has been near other children, which is what children are supposed to do.
