YOU’VE GOT QUESTIONS.
Got questions about head lice or Nittol treatments? Here are some that we hear most often:
Nittol Products
How do Nittol products work?
Nittol products use a physical dual-action approach. Our treatments work directly on lice to kill them, and help loosen eggs from the hair shaft so they comb out more easily. Because Nittol works physically rather than chemically, lice can’t develop resistance to it, no matter how often it’s used.
Which Nittol product should I use?
It depends on your situation. The Lotion is suitable for most hair types, its precision nozzle helps with targeted application. The Spray is the same formula as the Lotion in a format that works better on longer or thicker hair, helping you get even, mess-free coverage from root to tip. The Shampoo is a great choice if your child struggles to sit still and you want to fit treatment into bathtime routine. If you’re focused on prevention, the Nittol Anti-Lice Comb is a great tool to keep in your bathroom cabinet for regular checks; as it’s made from stainless steel, it won’t rust and can be used again and again.
Does Nittol kill eggs as well as lice?
Yes. Nittol products are formulated to kill up to 100% of head lice and their eggs. The Anti-Lice comb uses precision micro-grooved steel teeth, spaced closer together than the smallest egg, to catch lice and eggs in one pass.
What's in the Lotion formula?
The Lotion uses a dual-action formula based on isopropyl myristate and dimeticone, alongside squalane to support hair and scalp condition. It’s pesticide-free and free from insecticides and neurotoxic ingredients. Full ingredients are listed on the product page.
What's in the Spray formula?
The Spray uses a dual-action formula based on isopropyl myristate and dimeticone, alongside squalane to support hair and scalp condition. It’s pesticide-free and free from insecticides and neurotoxic ingredients. Full ingredients are listed on the product page.
What's in the Shampoo formula?
The Shampoo uses a dual-action formula based on isopropyl myristate and a surfactant complex. Full ingredients are listed on the product page.
How long does treatment take?
Nittol treatments work in 5 minutes. For better results on eggs, leave the product on for up to 10 minutes.
Should I apply a second treatment?
Check the hair again after 7 days and repeat the treatment if needed. This catches any lice that may have hatched from eggs since the first application. We recommend using the Nittol Anti-Lice Comb to check the hair every couple of days, for up to a week after treatment to ensure the infestation has cleared.
Why can I still see lice after treatment?
Dead lice and empty egg cases can remain in the hair after treatment and look like something is still there, even when it isn’t. If you can see movement, that suggests the treatment hasn’t cleared everything. Do a comb-through on dry hair to check. If you’re still seeing live lice after two treatments, speak to your pharmacist for guidance.
How do I know the treatment has worked?
Do a regular comb-through on dry hair every couple of days after treatment, for one week. If you’re finding nothing on the comb, it’s worked. Any static white cases you see are likely empty egg shells, which are harmless.
Is Nittol suitable for my child?
Nittol products are free from insecticides and have been dermatologically tested. They’re suitable for adults and children aged 6 months+. Please read the precautions information on the carton before use.
Can head lice become resistant to Nittol?
Chemical insecticide treatments can become less effective over time because lice adapt to them. Nittol works differently, using a physical mechanism that lice can’t adapt to, therefore resistance cannot develop.
